Upcountry (Makawao, Kula & Haleakalā)
Cool slopes, ranch towns and the road to the summit
The western slopes of Haleakalā: the paniolo (cowboy) town of Makawao, the farms and lavender of Kula, residential Pukalani, and the switchbacking road up to the 10,023-foot summit of Haleakalā National Park.
Stay here if…
You want cooler nights, quiet countryside and the shortest drive to a Haleakalā sunrise, and you don’t mind driving down to the beach.
The trade-off
There are no resort hotels, only a limited supply of B&Bs and vacation rentals, and the nearest swimming beaches are a long drive downhill. Summit sunrise needs a Recreation.gov reservation and serious warm layers. As of Oct. 19, 2026, Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area remains closed for storm repairs.
