Haleakalā National Park (Summit District)

The summit of Haleakalā rises to 10,023 feet, high above Maui’s clouds. The park road climbs from Upcountry through shrubland to the summit area, with overlooks into the crater’s cinder-cone landscape. Sunrise here is one of Maui’s best-known experiences, and it is managed by reservation.

Why we love it

Watching first light spill across the crater from above the clouds is unforgettable, and the sunset and night sky are just as good without the 3 a.m. alarm.

Current conditions: Haleakalā closed Sept. 24–26, 2026 for Hurricane Nolo and reopened Sept. 27; sunrise reservations resumed Sept. 28 (NPS and news reports). The summit visitor center reopened May 21, 2026 after a remodel.

What to expect

Plan on a long, winding drive with no streetlights or guardrails; from the entrance station to the summit is about 30 minutes. Before dawn it is regularly wet, windy and below freezing, and daytime highs at the top run only about 50–65°F, so bring real layers, hats and gloves. Park only in designated lots, which close when full. There is no food, gas or clothing for sale in the park, so fill up and pack snacks before you leave Pukalani or Kula. Allow a half day for sunrise plus a short walk at the summit.
