Road status in 2026
The highway was limited to local traffic during storms earlier in 2026 (Feb. 8, and after the March 14 Kona storm), and HDOT asked people to skip nonessential trips during Hurricane Nolo on Sept. 25. On Oct. 21, 2026, HDOT listed no Maui highway alerts. Separately, Maui County is closing the road at Kālepa Point (mile markers 38–39) on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for rockfall-netting work expected to run about five months from June. That stretch is on the back road between Kīpahulu and Kaupō, not on the way to Hāna.
At Kīpahulu, the National Park Service does not allow entry into the Pools of ʻOheʻo; you can view them from the Kūloa Point Trail.
Driving it with aloha
- Pull over where it’s safe to let local drivers pass.
- At one-lane bridges, the first car to arrive goes first. Never stop on a bridge or park on the highway.
- Treat any stop without welcoming signs as private property. At Waiʻānapanapa, the approach road is private and cars parked outside the park are towed.
- Cell service is patchy for much of the route; download maps before you go.
