NOAA says humpback whales can be seen in Hawaiʻi from November through April, and that more than half of the North Pacific’s humpbacks use Hawaiian waters. Operators put Maui’s best months at December through April. As of late October 2026, the season is just ahead: book for winter.

Most whale-watch boats leave from Māʻalaea Harbor; on the west side, rafts and small boats leave from Lahaina’s Front Street and the Mala boat ramp, and sunset sails board on Kāʻanapali Beach. Three of the operators here promise a sighting or another trip free.

Federal law bars approaching within 100 yards of a humpback by any means. Whales sometimes approach boats on their own; good captains then wait it out.

Raft, catamaran, or sunset sail?

  • Rafts and small boats (Hawaii Ocean Rafting, Makai Adventures) sit low to the water with fewer people; the ride is livelier.
  • Catamarans (Pacific Whale Foundation, Quicksilver) are steadier, with restrooms and shade, and suit all ages.
  • Sunset sails such as Sea Maui’s include whale watching from Dec. 15 to April 15, with drinks and pūpū.

The Sanctuary’s visitor center in Kīhei (726 S. Kīhei Rd) is a good free stop before or after.

FAQ

NOAA says humpbacks can be seen in Hawaiʻi from November through April. Maui operators list December through April as the main season, with a few early and late whales in November and May.

How close can boats get to whales?

No closer than 100 yards. Federal law prohibits approaching a humpback within 100 yards in Hawaiʻi by boat, kayak, drone, or swimming.

Can you see whales from shore on Maui?

Yes, in season. NOAA notes whales can be seen from shore, and the Sanctuary’s Kīhei visitor center overlooks the channel.
