Kealakekua Bay Snorkel Tours, Compared

The most protected snorkeling on the Kona coast lies off the white obelisk of the Captain Cook Monument — and the easiest way to reach it is by boat.

Kealakekua Bay has been a Marine Life Conservation District since 1969: no taking marine life, no fish feeding, and no anchoring in its northern subzone. The reef off Kaʻawaloa Flat, where the Captain Cook Monument stands, is the bay’s showpiece.

Getting there is the catch. You can hike the steep Kaʻawaloa Trail, or arrive by water — but private and rental kayaks may not land at Kaʻawaloa, and only permitted guided kayak tours can bring you ashore. Most visitors go by boat from Keauhou Bay or Honokōhau Harbor and snorkel straight off the stern.

Spinner dolphins often rest in Kona’s bays. Federal rules make it illegal to swim with or approach them within 50 yards, so enjoy them from the boat.

Boat, raft, kayak, or canoe?

  • Big catamarans (Fair Wind, Hang Loose) bring shade, restrooms, meals, slides, and flotation for nervous swimmers — the easy family choice.
  • Sailing catamaran: Sea Paradise sails the Hoku Nui to the bay and, weather permitting, the Red Hill lava arches.
  • Rafts: Kona Snorkel Tours’ fast raft (max 18) reaches sea caves and lava tubes the big boats can’t, with two snorkel stops.
  • Small boat: Hawaii Oceanic caps groups at 11, with about 90 minutes of snorkeling — best for confident swimmers.
  • Paddle: Kona Boys guides kayaks across the bay to the monument; Ehu and Kai Adventures paddles a traditional outrigger canoe with groups of up to 7.

Hiking to the monument instead

The historic Kaʻawaloa Trail is the only way to reach Kaʻawaloa Flat on foot. It is steep, hot, and has no restrooms; bring plenty of water and pack out everything. The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority also advises against recreational kayaking in the bay because of its impact on marine life — another reason to go with a permitted guide or a boat.

Reef etiquette and sunscreen

Hawaiʻi bans the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone or octinoxate, and in 2022 Hawaiʻi County passed an ordinance banning the sale on the island of sunscreens with any active ingredient other than zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Pack a mineral sunscreen and a rash guard. Never stand on coral, and give sea turtles at least 10 feet.

Snorkel from shore

Prefer to swim in from the beach? Two Step at Hōnaunau Bay, just outside Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau, and Kahaluʻu Beach Park near Keauhou are the classic Kona shore snorkels. See our snorkel beaches guide.

FAQ

Questions people ask before booking

Can you snorkel at the Captain Cook Monument without a tour?

Yes, by hiking the steep Kaʻawaloa Trail. Rental kayaks can cross Kealakekua Bay only if the vessel has a valid State Parks permit, and they may not land at Kaʻawaloa; only the permitted guided kayak tours can bring you ashore at the monument.

Which Kealakekua Bay snorkel tour is best for kids?

The big catamarans. Fair Wind adds water slides, a high-dive platform, flotation, and meals, and Hang Loose’s catamaran has a ride-along option and flotation for every level. Smaller boats and rafts set minimum ages (6 or 7) and expect confident swimmers.

Will we see dolphins?

Often, but not always — spinner dolphins frequently rest in Kona’s bays in the morning. Federal rules prohibit approaching or swimming with them within 50 yards, so tours watch them from the boat.

Morning or afternoon?

Morning. Most of the snorkel trips in this comparison leave in the morning, when the Kona coast is usually at its calmest.

What should I bring?

A mineral (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) sunscreen, a rash guard, a towel, and motion-sickness medicine if you need it. Masks and snorkels are provided; a few boats don’t allow full-face masks.

How much does a Captain Cook snorkel tour cost?

When we checked on October 19, 2026, Viator from-prices ranged from $69 for the raft trip to about $194 for the full-morning catamaran with breakfast and lunch. Prices vary by date.
