Trays of ahi and other poke behind the glass at a Hawaiʻi poke counter

Local Eats · East Side

Pono Market

A small, old-school Kapaʻa market counter known for poke and plate lunches: shoyu and spicy ahi poke, kalua pork, lomi lomi, musubi and sushi, packed to go. It opens early, at 6 a.m., so a breakfast poke bowl is an option.

Why we love it

It’s the real local takeout experience on the Coconut Coast. Grab poke and a plate, then eat it on the beach down the block.

What to expect

Expect a small storefront on Kūhiō Highway in Kapaʻa town with a deli case of poke, prepared Hawaiian foods and sushi. Order by the pound or as a bowl or plate, and take it to go, since seating is minimal or none. Kapaʻa Beach Park is a short walk away. Popular items can sell out after the lunch rush, so earlier is better. Hours have been limited to mornings and early afternoon, and the market has closed some days, so check before you go.
