West Oʻahu (Ko Olina, Kapolei & the Waiʻanae Coast)
Calm resort lagoons and dry, sunny coast
The leeward side: the Ko Olina resort with its four man-made lagoons, the planned city of Kapolei, and the rugged Waiʻanae Coast running north toward Kaʻena Point.

Stay here if…
You want a self-contained resort with calm lagoon swimming and reliable sun, such as Aulani or Four Seasons, and don’t mind the drive: the Four Seasons puts the airport about 30 minutes away and downtown Honolulu about 35, longer at rush hour.
The trade-off
Ko Olina feels removed from local life, and H-1 traffic toward Honolulu is heavy at rush hour. The Waiʻanae Coast beyond has few visitor services. As of Oct. 2026, Kaʻena Point’s Keawaʻula Trail is still closed after storm damage.
