A sheltered white-sand cove framed by lava points, reached through a short tunnel from a public lot. Reef starts just off the sand on both sides, making it one of West Maui’s easiest snorkel entries.
Why we love it
Calm morning water, real reef within a few kicks of the sand, and restrooms and showers steps away. It’s an easy first snorkel.
What to expect
From the public lot you walk past the restrooms, down stairs and through a short tunnel onto the sand. Enter on the left, where the bottom is sandy; good snorkeling starts about 20 yards out along the left point, and depths stay under about 15 feet. The right side is rocky underfoot, so don’t walk on it. Mornings are calmest before the trade winds build, and the beach gets crowded by midday. Winter swells occasionally reach the bay. There’s no lifeguard. Two hours is plenty.
Know before you go
- Parking
- A free public beach-access lot with about 40 stalls; overflow is roadside by the golf course. Resort lots aren’t for beachgoers.
- Lifeguards
- None. Snorkel with a buddy and check conditions before going in.
- Facilities
- Public restrooms, outdoor showers and a drinking fountain at the beach access.
- Best time
- Early morning, before the wind picks up and the crowds arrive.
- Reef
- Enter on the sandy left side. Don’t stand on the rocky right side; it’s slippery and damages the reef.
