The Greenwell story in Kona goes back to 1850, when Henry Nicholas Greenwell arrived from England. Today the farm offers free tours every day and free tastings of its 100% Kona coffees.
Why we love it
It's the best free introduction to Kona coffee. Take the tour, taste several coffees side by side, and you'll finally get what the fuss is about.
What to expect
Up mauka (toward the mountain) in Kealakekua, the visit centers on the retail store and a tasting station that pours several 100% Kona coffees before and after your tour. Free guided walks leave every half hour and last 45 to 60 minutes, moving from the coffee fields through the processing facilities, from seed to cup. Highlights include the nursery, which holds 20,000 to 40,000 young coffee plants at a time, and about 2 acres of “Grandma’s trees,” planted between 1900 and 1903. Fruit trees grow across the farm, and depending on the season you might see oranges, papaya, apple bananas, lychee, and Kona avocados.
Know before you go
- Tour times
- Free tours leave every 30 minutes from 8:30am to 2pm, and no reservation is needed. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the departure you want.
- Terrain
- Tours cross unpaved, uneven ground with mild slopes up and down, so wear closed shoes. Wandering the farm without a guide isn’t allowed.
- Groups
- Groups larger than 15 should arrange a private group tour by emailing matt@greenwellfarms.com ahead of time. Private tours visit more of the farm and let you sample many coffees at the tasting station.
- Deluxe tour
- The small-group Deluxe Tour & Tasting, with its guided cupping, is cancelled until further notice. The free tour and the manual brewing class are the current options.
- Hours
- The retail store is open 8am to 3:30pm, and coffee tasting runs 8:30am to 3:30pm. Call the tour hotline at (808) 323-2295 with questions.
- Best time
- Coffee flowers, called Kona snow, bloom from early winter into spring, so that’s when the fields smell sweetest.
