A tiny counter in the Kona Bali Kai complex on Aliʻi Drive that sells fresh poke by the pound, plus bowls and plates. It's one of Kona's go-to stops for poke to take to the beach.
Why we love it
If you're new to poke, start here, then take it straight to the beach.
What to expect
Look for Suite 101 in the Kona Bali Kai complex on Aliʻi Drive, south of Kailua village. The menu runs through a long list of poke styles, from Shack Special and Pele’s Kiss to Wet Hawaiian, Dynamite, Spicy Garlic, and a poke of the day. It’s set up for grab-and-go. Order a bowl (two poke choices, one side, and rice) or a plate (four choices, two sides, and two scoops of rice), or buy poke by the pound to take to the beach. Beyond the classics there are kim chee tako, spicy scallops, and garlic shrimp, plus hot kalua pork and laulau plates.
Know before you go
- Hours
- It opens Monday 10:30am to 4pm and Tuesday through Friday 10am to 4pm, and it’s closed weekends. It closes early when it sells out.
- Closures
- The shop sometimes closes for fishing trips, so call 808-329-POKE (7653) before you drive down.
- What to order
- First-timers should try a bowl with Shack Special and Shoyu Poke. Sides worth adding include the spicy crab salad, wakame seaweed salad, and kim chee cucumbers.
- By the pound
- Create-your-own poke is sold by the pound with a 1-pound minimum. That’s the easy way to feed a group at Kahaluʻu or Magic Sands down the road.
- Go early
- With a 4pm close and limited supply, lunchtime or earlier gives you the best choice of flavors.
